All You Need to Know About the Defunct Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)

The Immigration and Naturalization Service was an agency under the United States Government founded in 1933 to deal with immigration matters in the United States. It was placed under the United States Department of Justice till 2003 when it was dissolved due to the controversy behind the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center from immigrants in the United States from the Middle East. They were then replaced with three federal entities which are the United States Customs and Border Protection, The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. The bodies are governed by the Department of Homeland Security in the United States.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service was solely in charge of the establishment and administration of immigration laws and policies to be able to ensure that quality immigrants gain access to the United States. They inspected foreigners that arrived through any point of entry to the United States and detected any illegal entry to the country. The Immigration and Naturalization Service also helps immigrants to obtain their green card and permanent residency in the United States.  These roles, however, have been given to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service since 2003 and they have carried out their duties effectively.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service was one of the go-to establishments when it comes to dealing with immigration matters. So far, they put in a lot of effort to ensure that they protect the immigrants and keep the illegal immigrants away from their borders. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement was one of the entities by which the INS was separated. They are in charge of guarding against any illegal entry of individuals and products in the United States. They are the Border Patrol Team which was merged with the INS previously.

The Second Entity is Customs and Border Protection. They are currently one of the largest federal agencies under the Department of Homeland Security. Their sole responsibility is to regulate foreign trade and deal with the collection of import duties. They are also in charge of enforcing the U.S Border regulations.

Conclusion

The INS was a very reputable agency in the United States of America. But after it was defunct, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service took over its responsibility to ensure that immigrants coming into the U.S have a sound background and are criminally free.

How to Apply for Us Citizenship

Whether it is for permanent residence for you or your family members, the importance of being a citizen cannot be overemphasized. Without it, you cannot fully enjoy the rights and benefits of being in a country, no matter how long you’ve lived there, especially in the US. Want to apply for US citizenship through the naturalization process but you have no idea of how to begin? Not to worry. We got you covered.

First, you have to know whether you are already a US citizen. A lot of people assume that they are not citizens just because they were not born there. Check your family records and birth documents. You automatically qualify for US citizenship if either or both of your parents by biological birth or adoption are citizens, whether you were born in the country or not.

Then, you check whether you are eligible to become a citizen. Do you have all the legal documents? Do you have a good command of the English Language? Have you been of good moral behavior? Have you been living in the US legally?  Ensure that you review all legal and personal documents that contain the required information needed for the next stage. Also, fill and submit immigration forms for the naturalization process.

On successful completion, proceed to the biometrics department to get your fingerprints and data taken. The USCIS will inform you on a suitable date and time. This is very essential in getting US citizenship, as it will help investigation agencies to run a background check on you. Ensure you arrive at the venue on time. After that, USCIS will schedule an interview. It can come before or after taking the English and civics test. This is one area many persons flop. Make sure that you answer all questions with confidence and a great amount of honesty. Do not fret even when the interviewer asks personal questions. Then the USCIS will reach a decision if your application is granted, denied or continued (this happens in cases where the applicant fails the English test or does not provide all documents).

The last and final stage in getting a US citizenship is taking the oath of allegiance to the country. If your interview falls on the same day with the naturalization ceremony and is successful, you may be allowed to take the oath of allegiance that day. But if not, the USCIS will give you a date and time. Make sure that you review the questions with the officer and turn in your permanent resident card, otherwise known as Green Card.

American Citizenship – the Naturalization Process in the United States

People come to the U.S for different reasons- to acquire school education, come for training and seminars, for vacation, but most importantly, as part of their job requirements or for marriage and family purposes. In whatever country you live in for the long term, it is very important that you become a citizen of that place to receive all benefits and rights, which in this case, is the American citizenship.

There are different ways one can acquire American citizenship, one of which is the naturalization process. This is the legal process that allows foreigners to become citizens of the United States and ensure full rights and benefits. The first step in this process is to obtain your green card, and can be gotten through three ways:

  • Through your family members: You will be able to be sponsored if one of your family members is living in the United States.
  • Through your job: People get their green card through their jobs, especially if it is permanent employment. Your employer can sponsor you or you can sponsor yourself without an employer if you have extraordinary skills and abilities
  • As an asylum or refuge seeker: People who have run away from their home country as a result of war, conflict or natural disaster can seek for a green card in the U.S if they have stayed more than a year.

After that is done, you must ensure that you satisfy all residency conditions. Provide all legal documents that state that you have been a legal resident of the US for more than five years and be physically present for more than thirty months during those five years. Then you submit all personal documents stating that you are not less than eighteen years of age, have good moral conduct with no criminal record and be able to understand, write and speak the English language. If your documents are assessed and deemed satisfactory, then you proceed to give your biometrics and prepare for your English and civics test. Once passed, you prepare for an interview. This is a very important stage in getting your American citizenship. Ensure you give off a good impression and answer the interviewer’s questions with all honesty. Sometimes, the interview comes before the English test. If you speak very well in the interview, you may not have to write the test.

Then taking the Oath of Allegiance to the United States is the final step in getting your American Citizenship. Ensure you review the questions with an officer at the naturalization ceremony, and you’re good to go!
